The Government of Ghana has declared Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, as nationwide general cleaning days as part of measures to improve sanitation and reduce the risk of future flooding.

The decision follows recent flooding incidents that affected parts of the country, with authorities highlighting the need for improved environmental cleanliness and proper waste management to help prevent the blockage of drains and waterways.

According to the government, the exercise will focus on clearing rubbish from communities, desilting drains and ensuring that public spaces are kept clean. Residents, businesses, local authorities and other stakeholders are expected to participate actively in the exercise.

Officials have stressed that poor sanitation, particularly the improper disposal of waste, remains one of the major factors contributing to flooding in many communities. The cleaning exercise is therefore aimed at encouraging collective responsibility in maintaining a cleaner and safer environment.

Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) have been tasked to coordinate activities within their respective areas and ensure that the exercise is carried out effectively.

The government has also called on citizens to support the initiative by taking part in the clean-up activities and adopting better sanitation practices beyond the designated cleaning days.

Authorities believe that sustained efforts in keeping communities clean, alongside proper drainage management and enforcement of sanitation regulations, will help reduce the impact of future heavy rains and flooding.

Residents are encouraged to take the exercise seriously as the country works together to address sanitation challenges and build safer communities.
