James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister-designate, has pledged to work closely with the Ministries of Roads and Highways and Tourism, Arts, and Culture to unlock the vast tourism potential of the region.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, Mr. Gunu emphasized the rich and diverse attractions of the Volta Region, stressing the need for better infrastructure and promotion to fully realize its tourism opportunities.
He expressed his commitment to collaborating with Abla Dzifa Gomashie, MP for Ketu South and a key figure in the Tourism Ministry, as well as the Roads Minister, to enhance accessibility to tourist destinations and elevate the region’s profile as a top travel destination.
“The Volta Region’s breathtaking landscape is a tourist attraction in itself,” Mr. Gunu stated. “As Regional Minister, my priority will be to work with relevant stakeholders to improve access to these sites. Partnership with the Tourism Ministry and the Roads Ministry is essential for unlocking the full potential of our tourism sector.”
Addressing Challenges in Tourism Development
Mr. Gunu acknowledged existing challenges, including poor road networks leading to tourist hotspots, inadequate promotion of the region’s lesser-known attractions, and limited local engagement in the tourism sector.
Currently, reports indicate that approximately 1,000 visitors flock to the region on weekends for various activities such as festivals, funerals, and sightseeing. However, these numbers could significantly increase with targeted investment in infrastructure and marketing.
Proposed Interventions for Tourism Growth
To tackle these issues, Mr. Gunu outlined plans to prioritize the construction and rehabilitation of motorable roads to key tourist destinations, ensuring easy access for both domestic and international travelers. He also highlighted the need to promote the region’s hidden gems, such as cultural landmarks, waterfalls, and wildlife reserves, through coordinated campaigns.
Additionally, Mr. Gunu emphasized the importance of community involvement, encouraging local residents to play active roles in maintaining and promoting tourist sites to boost economic benefits at the grassroots level.
A Vision for Growth
By fostering collaboration and focusing on strategic infrastructure development, James Gunu aims to transform the Volta Region into a leading tourism hub in Ghana. His vision includes increasing visitor numbers, creating jobs, and generating revenue, all while showcasing the natural and cultural wealth of the region.
