The Ghana Medical Trust Fund has appealed to traditional authorities across the country to support its public awareness campaign by using their influence to educate communities and encourage eligible beneficiaries to access the initiative.

The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, made the appeal during a meeting with the National House of Chiefs, where she emphasised that the long-term success of the Fund depends not only on government support but also on strong community engagement led by traditional leaders.

According to her, many Ghanaians remain unaware of the existence of the Trust Fund, while others do not know who qualifies for assistance or how to benefit from the programme.

She explained that chiefs are well-positioned to bridge this information gap because of the trust and respect they command within their communities.

“When our chiefs speak, communities listen; when chiefs champion an important national initiative, people embrace it with trust and confidence. We therefore humbly seek your partnership,” she said.

During the engagement held on Friday, July 3, some chiefs raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of the initiative, particularly the use of the “Mahama Cares” name associated with the programme.

Responding to the concerns, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku assured the chiefs that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund is designed to be sustainable and will continue to serve Ghanaians beyond any political administration.

The President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, pledged the House’s full support for the initiative and encouraged regional presidents of the House to organise sensitisation programmes in their respective regions.

He urged traditional leaders to educate their communities about the Fund and help ensure that people living with chronic illnesses understand how to access the support available.

The engagement forms part of efforts to expand public awareness of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund and strengthen partnerships aimed at improving healthcare access for vulnerable citizens.
