Parliament has passed the Tribunals Bill, 2026, following the completion of its third reading and approval by lawmakers, paving the way for the possible return of tribunals under a revised legal framework.

The passage of the Bill marks a major step in government’s efforts to strengthen the administration of justice, reduce delays in court processes and improve access to legal remedies for citizens.

The legislation will now be forwarded to President John Dramani Mahama for his assent before it can become law.

During proceedings on Thursday, July 16, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, moved for the Bill to be read for the third time and sought permission from the Speaker to waive the usual one-day waiting period required between the consideration stage and the third reading.

Following the approval of the motion, Parliament proceeded with the third reading and subsequently passed the Bill.

Dr Ayine had earlier introduced the Tribunals Bill, 2026, explaining that the legislation was designed to restore tribunals while ensuring they operate within appropriate constitutional safeguards.

According to him, the proposed tribunal system would help improve access to justice, address delays within the traditional court system and provide additional avenues for resolving legal matters.

The Bill was previously referred to Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee and the Judiciary Committee for detailed examination before returning to the House for final consideration.

With Parliament’s approval, the next step is for President Mahama to assent to the Bill. If signed into law, the legislation will provide the legal foundation for the reintroduction of tribunals in Ghana.

The move forms part of broader judicial reforms aimed at improving efficiency, strengthening legal processes and ensuring that citizens have timely access to justice.
