Senegal football icon Sadio Mané has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 14-year career with the Lions of Teranga.
The 34-year-old confirmed his decision in a statement published by Le Quotidien on Friday, just days after Senegal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended in a dramatic 3-2 extra-time defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32.
Mané bows out as one of the greatest players in Senegal’s football history, having made 130 appearances for the national team since making his debut in 2012.
A Legendary International Career
Throughout his international career, Mané established himself as one of Senegal’s most influential players, inspiring a generation with his leadership, determination and consistent performances.
His greatest achievement came in 2021, when he helped Senegal win its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title after the team had finished runners-up in the 2019 tournament.
The former Liverpool star played a crucial role in Senegal’s rise as one of Africa’s football powerhouses and became one of the country’s most decorated footballers.
Emotional Farewell to Senegal Fans
In his farewell message, the former Senegal captain expressed gratitude to supporters who stood by him throughout his journey with the national team.
“Know that I sacrificed everything for this flag. I gave my all and always fought fiercely for our country.”
He also thanked fans for the unwavering support they gave him over the years.

Not the End of His Contribution
Although Mané has retired from international football, he made it clear that he is not walking away from Senegalese football completely.
The two-time African Footballer of the Year revealed that he hopes to contribute to the country’s football development in the future through coaching, technical work or football administration.
“Tomorrow, I will gladly put my experience at the service of the Nation, whether within a technical staff, on the coaching bench, or in the governing bodies.”
Club Career Continues
While his international journey has come to an end, Mané will continue his club career with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, where he remains under contract until 2027.
