The Savannah Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has established a seven-member committee to investigate the disappearance of a newborn from the East Gonja Municipal Hospital in Salaga.

The committee, constituted by the Savannah Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. John Ekow Otoo, has been tasked with uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident, recommending disciplinary measures where necessary, and proposing steps to prevent similar cases in the future.

The move comes as the Ghana Health Service confirmed that staff members responsible for the baby’s care before the disappearance have been interdicted and are currently facing criminal prosecution.

In a statement issued on June 24, the GHS revealed that the affected staff have been arraigned before the Tamale High Court in connection with the case.

“The staff responsible for the baby’s care before her disappearance have been arraigned before the Tamale High Court and are currently facing criminal proceedings,” the statement noted.

According to the GHS, the interdictions were carried out in accordance with its Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures and will remain in force until the legal process is concluded.

The Health Directorate also stated that it is working closely with the Ghana Police Service to locate the missing baby and has appealed to the public to provide any information that could assist ongoing investigations.

As part of the nationwide search effort, hospitals, child welfare clinics, and Community Health Officers have been directed to remain alert and report any suspicious mother-and-baby pair to the nearest police station.

The GHS further disclosed that psychological support has been arranged for the baby’s parents as they cope with the ordeal.

Authorities have assured the public of their commitment to ensuring accountability and maintaining high standards of patient safety across the country’s healthcare facilities.

The newborn reportedly disappeared from the East Gonja Municipal Hospital on June 10, 2026.

On June 12, two midwives from the facility, Frank Atanga and Mariam Mohammed, were remanded into custody by the Tamale Circuit Court over their alleged involvement in the case.

The two were charged with conspiracy to steal and abduction and pleaded not guilty when they appeared before the court. Police investigations into the disappearance remain ongoing.
