Commercial drivers and motorbike riders operating on the Shama Nyankrom Junction–Nyankrom town road in the Western Region brought traffic to a halt on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, over the deteriorating state of the road.

The action affected the movement of several vehicles, including haulage trucks servicing the Marcopolo and Twyford Keda manufacturing plants.

According to the drivers, deep potholes, flooding, and poor drainage have made the road extremely difficult to use, especially during the rainy season. Frustrated by the worsening situation, they blocked sections of the road and embarked on a self-organised communal exercise to clear choked gutters and improve the flow of water.

Their activities, however, resulted in heavy traffic congestion as motorbikes were used to block parts of the road, preventing vehicles from passing through.

One of the drivers explained that blocked drains have contributed significantly to the road’s deterioration.

“The gutter has been choked with debris, and when it rains, the floodwater spills onto the road, making the situation worse. We organised ourselves to desilt the gutters so water can flow freely. That is why we stopped vehicles from using the road,” he said.

The drivers insist their actions should not be seen as a demonstration but rather an effort to address a problem that continues to affect their daily operations.

“We are not demonstrating; we are only trying to solve the problem because the trucks are able to manoeuvre through, but those of us with smaller vehicles are unable to move,” another driver added.

The incident highlights growing concerns over road infrastructure in the area, with residents and road users calling for urgent intervention to prevent further deterioration and disruptions.
