UEFA has criticised FIFA for overturning the one-match suspension handed to United States forward Folarin Balogun, describing the decision as one that “crossed a red line” ahead of the USA’s Round of 16 clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Balogun was shown a red card during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. Although the AS Monaco striker scored in the match, his dismissal initially ruled him out of Monday’s Round of 16 encounter against Belgium.

However, FIFA later converted the automatic one-match suspension into a suspended ban, making Balogun eligible for selection against Belgium.

According to The New York Times, US President Donald Trump personally contacted FIFA to request a review of Balogun’s case.

Following FIFA’s decision, President Trump celebrated the outcome on his Truth Social platform, writing:

“Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!”

Reacting to the decision, UEFA expressed strong opposition, arguing that the move undermines the integrity and consistency of football’s disciplinary rules.

“The decision to suspend for a probationary period of a year the implementation of the one-match automatic suspension following the red card issued to the player Folarin Balogun crossed a red line,” UEFA said.

The European governing body added:

“Football is the most loved sport in the world because it is a beautiful game and is trusted because it is played everywhere with the same laws. We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.”

The controversy has sparked widespread debate over FIFA’s disciplinary processes and the independence of football’s governing institutions ahead of the knockout stages of the World Cup.
