Residents of Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, should expect intermittent power outages in the coming weeks as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) undertakes maintenance work on power supply cables.

Several parts of the city have recently experienced prolonged blackouts, with some areas going without electricity for nearly 24 hours. The ECG has attributed these disruptions to excessive demand and overheating, which have strained the region’s power distribution network.

Benjamin Obeng Antwi, the Public Relations Officer for ECG-Ashanti West, explained that rising temperatures have led to increased energy consumption, exceeding the capacity of existing distribution lines.

“When the temperature is high, electricity consumption in households also rises. This contributes to load growth and puts pressure on the system,” he told David Akuetteh on Luv FM.

To address these issues, the ECG plans to replace affected power distribution lines and enhance the infrastructure to support higher energy demands. The sub-transmission team has set a two-week timeline for these repairs.

“It’s not a continuous blackout for Kumasi, but there will be outages as maintenance work is carried out. Replacing the cables is just one of several measures,” Mr. Obeng Antwi assured.

Additionally, the ECG is collaborating with the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to secure more transformers and improve power distribution.

“We are working to install one of the 145MVA transformers at the Bulk Supply Points—first at Anwomaso, then at Ridge. The Anwomaso installation is expected to be completed by the first quarter of the year, after which we’ll be able to distribute more power efficiently,” he added.
