Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, the Minister-Designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, has proposed a reassessment of Ghana’s retirement age, currently set at 60 years, to better reflect the country’s economic realities and workforce demands.
Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 30, Dr. Pelpuo highlighted the need for broad national consensus on the matter.
“There have been ongoing discussions about raising the retirement age, with some suggesting 65 years and others even 70. If individuals are still healthy and capable, why should they be forced to retire?” he remarked.
However, he emphasized that any adjustments should be the result of inclusive dialogue and careful consideration of Ghana’s economic readiness to support such a policy change.
Dr. Pelpuo expressed openness to a review but stressed that the decision must align with the country’s capacity to implement and sustain the shift effectively.
