Steven Gerrard has stepped down as manager of Al-Ettifaq by mutual agreement, bringing his 18-month tenure at the Saudi Arabian club to an end.
The former Aston Villa and Rangers boss took charge in July 2023 but struggled to maintain consistent results this season. Despite signing a two-year contract extension in January 2024, which was set to keep him at the club until 2027, he now departs with Al-Ettifaq sitting 12th in the league, just five points above the relegation zone.
Reflecting on his exit, Gerrard acknowledged football’s unpredictability, stating, “Sometimes things don’t go the way we plan, but I leave with great respect for the club and the country. I am confident that the work being done will lead to success in the future, and I wish the team all the best.”
He also expressed gratitude for his time in Saudi Arabia, noting that the experience had been personally rewarding. “From the very first day, I was warmly welcomed. It’s been a great opportunity to work in a new environment with a different culture, and I have learned a lot,” he added.
Al-Ettifaq club president, Same Al Misehal, praised Gerrard’s contributions, highlighting his impact on the team. “He changed the club for the better, and that will not be forgotten. While things didn’t go as expected, the strong foundations he helped lay will benefit the club in the long run,” he said.
Gerrard, 44, enjoyed a decorated playing career with Liverpool and England before transitioning into management with Rangers in 2018. He led the Scottish side to their first league title in a decade in the 2020-21 season. He later took over at Aston Villa in November 2021 but was dismissed after 11 months following a disappointing run of results.
During his first season with Al-Ettifaq, he guided the team to a sixth-place finish. However, this campaign proved challenging, with only five wins in 17 league matches. His overall record stands at 23 victories in 59 games.
Gerrard was reportedly among the highest-paid managers in world football during his time in Saudi Arabia, earning a salary of approximately £15 million per year.
