Former Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Muntari has opened up about the pivotal moment that led to his transfer to Italian giants Inter Milan, revealing how a phone call from Jose Mourinho changed the course of his career.
Muntari joined Inter in 2008 after an impressive spell at Portsmouth in the English Premier League, where he played a crucial role under Harry Redknapp and helped the club win the FA Cup in his final season.
In an interview with Flashscore, Muntari reflected on how Mourinho personally reached out to him, making his move to Italy a swift reality.
“Mourinho was in Ghana during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, and at the time, I was playing for Portsmouth,” Muntari recalled. “We had faced his Chelsea team, and we played really well. After the tournament, during pre-season for my second season at Portsmouth, my agent hinted that Inter Milan might be interested in me.”
He continued, “During training that day, I delivered some great crosses, and Redknapp jokingly said, ‘That’s brilliant, that’s why top teams like Inter want you.’ When I got home, I received a call from Jose. He simply asked, ‘Do you want to play for me?’ I said, ‘Yes, sir.’ His response was, ‘I’ll see you in Milan tomorrow,’ and he hung up. The next day, I signed for Inter. The rest is history.”
Muntari’s first season at Inter saw him lift the Serie A title, and he went on to play a key role in the club’s historic 2009/10 treble-winning campaign, helping them secure the Serie A, Coppa Italia, and UEFA Champions League trophies.
