Shortlisted candidates for the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) are scheduled to undergo vetting this Thursday.
The selection of a new CEO is of great interest to residents, who are eager to see Kumasi regain its reputation as the Garden City of West Africa.
Among those shortlisted for the position are former Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Richard Ofori Agyemang, former Atwima Nwabiagya South District Chief Executive (DCE), Nana Asare Bediako, and Martin Asamoah Atuahene.
Strong Support for Nana Asare Bediako
Ahead of the vetting process, some National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters in Atwima Nwabiagya have thrown their weight behind Nana Asare Bediako.
According to Yusif Basit, a spokesperson for the group, Bediako has played a significant role in the NDC’s political success in the Ashanti Region.
“He has been instrumental in strengthening the party in this region for the past seven years. His dedication and competence are unquestionable,” Basit stated.
Nana Asare Bediako’s Role in the NDC’s 2024 Election Strategy
As part of its 2024 election strategy, the NDC divided the Ashanti Region into zones for efficient campaigning and monitoring.
Nana Asare Bediako was a key figure in Zone Seven, which oversaw constituencies within the Atwima Nwabiagya enclave.
His efforts contributed to the party’s historic win in the Ahafo Ano South East Constituency, where he also served as Security Coordinator for the NDC’s campaign.
Supporters credit him with financing and providing resources for the party, especially during its time in opposition.
“He personally donated a pickup truck that the party used for eight years. He even branded his own car with NDC colors, and we often used it for party activities,” Basit revealed.
Beyond logistics, Bediako actively participated in grassroots campaigning and communications, solidifying his influence within the party.
Proven Competence in Leadership
Supporters argue that Bediako’s leadership experience as DCE for Atwima Nwabiagya makes him well-qualified for the KMA role.
They highlight his contributions to the near-completion of the Afari Military Hospital and his efforts in organizing markets within the district as key achievements.
“His ability to implement government policies effectively shows he is more than capable of handling this position,” Basit added.
Respect for Traditional Authority
Although traditional leaders do not publicly endorse political appointees, their influence in key appointments within the Ashanti Region is widely acknowledged.
Supporters believe that Bediako has demonstrated strong ties with traditional authorities in Atwima Nwabiagya, a quality seen as essential for anyone assuming leadership in Kumasi.
Pressing Challenges Facing Kumasi
Kumasi residents continue to express concerns over the city’s slow pace of development.
Persistent issues such as congestion, poor waste management, and delays in infrastructure projects remain unresolved.
The Central Business District (CBD) is plagued by filth and overcrowding, with past efforts to curb street vending and tricycle operations yielding minimal success.
The delayed completion of the second phase of the Kejetia Market project also remains a concern, as traders continue to operate in cramped and unsafe conditions.
For the next KMA CEO, tackling these long-standing issues will be a major challenge, with residents expecting decisive action to restore Kumasi’s lost glory.
