Henceforth, our prisoners will work in our agriculture sector – Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso President

Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has announced a groundbreaking prison reform policy aimed at integrating prisoners into the country’s agricultural sector while reducing their sentences.

Speaking on the initiative, President Traoré stated, “Henceforth, our prisoners will be working in our agriculture sector while their sentences are reduced. Our laws must represent African values.”

Under the new criminal law, inmates, including those awaiting sentencing, can participate in agricultural work, with every month of labor translating to a three-month reduction in their sentence.

The initiative has been widely praised for its focus on rehabilitation, economic empowerment, and restorative justice. Social media users have highlighted its potential to ease financial constraints on the prison system, equip inmates with useful skills, and boost food production across the country.

By prioritizing agricultural development as a means of reform, Burkina Faso aims to create a more sustainable and humane approach to incarceration, reflecting values rooted in African traditions.
