After a temporary withdrawal from all football activities, Asante Kotoko has finally announced its return to competitive football, with club officials confirming that they will resume participation in the Ghana Premier League after the burial of the late supporter, Nana Yaw Frimpong, on March 6, 2025.
The Kumasi-based club halted its participation in football following the tragic stabbing of their dedicated fan, popularly known as Pooley, during their Ghana Premier League clash with Nsoatreman FC at the Nana Konamansah Park in Nsoatre on February 2, 2025.
As part of efforts to demand justice for their slain supporter, Asante Kotoko decided to suspend all activities until significant progress was made in the case.
Official Statement on Kotoko’s Return
During a press conference on Monday, club communications director Samuel Sarfo Duku provided an update on the team’s return.
“The Ghana Police Service is also doing its part, so we are convinced they will intensify their investigations and the court will continue with the trial. In view of the foregoing, and with the mandate of the IMC [Interim Management Committee], I would like to declare that based on the happenings so far, Asante Kotoko shall be ready and willing to return to the pitch after the burial and final funeral rites of the late Nana Yaw Frimpong, alias Pooley. And we hope our supporters and all of you out there will agree.”
Duku also expressed satisfaction with the way the police have handled the investigations so far, assuring supporters that justice remains a priority.

With Asante Kotoko preparing to return to action, their decision is expected to influence the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) plans for resuming the league, which has been suspended since the incident.
