Nana Frimpong Ziega Warns Women Against Changing Surnames After Marriage

Popular entertainment pundit Nana Frimpong Ziega has sparked debate by urging women to avoid adopting their husband’s surname after marriage, citing potential challenges, especially in the event of a divorce.

The Hidden Dangers of Changing Surnames

Speaking on Neat FM in an interview spotted on Instagram on March 4, 2025, Nana Frimpong Ziega argued that women who take their husband’s surname often face difficulties when the marriage ends.

“A woman should never change the surname given to her by her father to that of her husband. It creates unnecessary complications, particularly after divorce,” he stated.

Ziega pointed to renowned gospel musicians Empress Gifty and Obaapa Christy, who he claims are experiencing an identity crisis due to adopting their former husbands’ surnames.

“Look at Obaapa Christy and Empress Gifty. Many people still call them Christiana Love and Gifty Osei, even though those are not their names anymore. They are no longer with their husbands, yet their ex-husbands’ names continue to define them. This can cause serious issues when handling official documents, forcing them to go through the hassle of swearing an affidavit,” he explained.

A Firm Stand Against the Tradition

Nana Frimpong Ziega further emphasized that he would never allow his daughters to take their husband’s surname, asserting that it erases a woman’s original identity and causes unnecessary legal and social burdens.

“No daughter of mine will ever adopt her husband’s surname. I don’t know that man from anywhere—he is not my blood. What happens if the marriage ends? She will have to go through the stress of changing everything back,” he argued.

Public Reaction & Debate

His statements have ignited conversations about whether women should continue the tradition of adopting their husband’s surname or maintain their birth identity. While some agree with his stance, others believe that name-changing is a symbol of unity in marriage.

Regardless of personal views, Ziega’s argument raises important legal and identity-related concerns, sparking a broader discussion about women’s autonomy and traditions in modern society.
