Kennedy Agyapong Speaks on $18M US Defamation Verdict: “It Has Made Me a Better Person”

Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has broken his silence on the $18 million defamation verdict handed against him by a US jury, stating that the legal battle has transformed him into a better person.

Upon his return to Ghana on Thursday, March 27, 2025, Agyapong addressed a gathering of supporters, describing his courtroom experience with investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas as a significant learning curve.

Kennedy Agyapong’s Response to the Verdict

“We should all remain calm. Anyone who chooses to speak the truth and fight for the voiceless will face challenges like these. But through it all, I have become a better person,” he affirmed.

Expressing gratitude to his loyal supporters, Agyapong said:
“I sincerely thank all of you. This experience will only push me to keep going. Your unwavering support shows that you recognize the efforts I make to amplify the voices of the people. Is that true?”

Background of the Defamation Case

The case against Kennedy Agyapong stemmed from comments he made about Anas Aremeyaw Anas following the journalist’s 2018 BBC investigation into football corruption in Ghana.

In 2021, Agyapong labeled Anas a “criminal” and falsely implicated him in the 2019 murder of journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale. This led Anas to file a defamation lawsuit against the outspoken politician in the Essex County Superior Court, USA.

US Court Ruling & $18M Fine

On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, an eight-member jury in Essex County Superior Court upheld an earlier ruling, finding Kennedy Agyapong liable for defamation. The court awarded Anas Aremeyaw Anas $18 million in damages, marking a significant legal victory for the investigative journalist.

Despite the staggering penalty, Agyapong remains resolute and optimistic. His latest remarks indicate that while the lawsuit may have been a setback, he sees it as a stepping stone toward personal and political growth.

As reactions pour in, Ghanaians will be watching closely to see how Kennedy Agyapong navigates this legal and financial challenge in the coming months.
