The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reaffirmed its confidence in Morocco’s capacity to successfully host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), citing the country’s extensive experience in organizing major football events.
In a statement released on Tuesday, CAF highlighted Morocco’s proven track record, which includes hosting the 2018 African Nations Championship, the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, and the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup. These events underscore the nation’s readiness and expertise in handling high-profile tournaments.
Morocco previously hosted AFCON in 1988, a time when the competition featured only eight teams. The 2025 edition will see 24 nations competing, a testament to the remarkable growth of African football over the decades.
World-Class Facilities
Morocco boasts a range of modern stadiums that are set to host the matches. Potential venues include the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca, the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, and major facilities in Tangier, Agadir, Marrakech, and Fez. Many of these stadiums are undergoing renovations to ensure they meet or exceed CAF’s standards for international competitions.
CAF praised Morocco’s advanced infrastructure, passionate football culture, and established history of hosting prestigious tournaments, expressing confidence that the nation will deliver an AFCON that sets new benchmarks for the event.
Tournament Details
The 2025 AFCON will take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. The group stage draw is set to occur next Monday at 7 p.m. at the Mohammed V Theatre in Casablanca.
As the host country, Morocco automatically qualifies for the tournament, joining 23 other teams that earned their spots during the qualifying rounds held between September and November 2024.
The lineup for the tournament includes several powerhouse teams, such as Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Nigeria, Egypt, and Algeria. However, notable absences include Ghana and Guinea, who failed to qualify.
With Morocco at the helm, CAF is optimistic that the 2025 AFCON will be a historic celebration of African football.
