Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, the Minister-designate for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, has commended the government’s District Housing Project, describing it as a transformative solution to the housing crisis in rural communities.
During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Mr. Adjei expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting its potential to improve living conditions in Ghana’s districts and rural areas.
“Mr. Chairman, I believe the district housing policy is a commendable initiative. It makes affordable housing accessible to people in our districts and rural communities,” he said in response to questions from Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, a former Minister for Works and Housing.
Addressing Accommodation Challenges for Rural Professionals
Mr. Adjei emphasized that a major barrier to attracting professionals to rural postings is the lack of decent housing. He stressed that the District Housing Project would help resolve this issue, making it easier for workers to accept transfers to underserved areas.
“Many professionals hesitate to move to rural areas due to accommodation difficulties. If we sustain the district housing policy, it will significantly improve conditions for workers and benefit residents in these communities,” he explained.
Economic and Retirement Benefits
Beyond addressing rural housing shortages, Mr. Adjei noted that the project would stimulate economic activity by creating opportunities for local contractors and artisans involved in the construction process.
Additionally, he pointed out its long-term benefits for retirees who wish to return to their hometowns after years of working in urban centers.
“A lot of Ghanaians dream of retiring in their villages, but the challenge is finding a suitable place to live. This initiative can make that transition smoother,” he remarked.
Mr. Adjei reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the project if confirmed, stressing its importance in ensuring equitable housing access for all Ghanaians.
