A newly constructed three-unit classroom block for Kamalo D/A Junior High School in the Kwahu Afram Plains North District has been abandoned after a reported invasion of bats, raising concerns over the use of public funds and school infrastructure in the area.

The facility, which was built to improve teaching and learning conditions, has now been left unused, forcing pupils to continue studying under difficult conditions.

According to the Public Interest Accountability Committee (PIAC), which disclosed the development in a statement after inspecting petroleum-funded projects in the Eastern Region, the school is also struggling with a severe teacher shortage.

Only two teachers are currently responsible for both primary and junior high school pupils, resulting in combined classes and overcrowded learning conditions.

The committee’s inspection revealed broader concerns about the state of development projects across the region.

PIAC reported that boreholes with hand pumps at Kubease and Bodua were functioning properly and providing reliable water to surrounding communities.

However, at Maame Krobo, a solar-powered mechanised water system that had been completed was found to be non-functional due to a breakdown.

The committee also inspected road rehabilitation works on the Maame Krobo Regional Boundary Road and observed that some patched sections had already begun to deteriorate, raising concerns about durability and workmanship.

At the Afram Plains Agricultural Zone (Konadu Enclaves), irrigation works were ongoing and expected to be completed by October 2026, with plans to lease the facility to commercial farmers to boost agricultural production.

Meanwhile, at Tease, the Agenda 111 hospital project was found to have stalled, with construction completely abandoned.

The PIAC inspection highlights ongoing challenges in project execution, maintenance and oversight across several government-funded initiatives, despite significant investments aimed at improving infrastructure and public services.
