The Ministry of Education has directed the immediate suspension of all Senior High School (SHS) graduation ceremonies across the country following growing concerns about excessive displays of wealth and flamboyance at such events.
In a statement dated June 20, 2026, the Ministry said it had taken notice of increasing public criticism over the trend of lavish celebrations that have become common in some secondary schools during graduation ceremonies.
According to the Ministry, schools are meant to promote learning, discipline, character development and responsible citizenship. It stressed that graduation ceremonies should focus on celebrating academic achievement and personal growth rather than becoming platforms for showcasing wealth and luxury.
The Ministry emphasized that school events must reflect the values of modesty, dignity and respect that are associated with the educational environment.
It also condemned any conduct by students, parents, guardians or other stakeholders that promotes extravagance and shifts attention away from the true purpose of graduation ceremonies.
Officials explained that the suspension will allow for a review of existing practices to ensure that future graduation ceremonies align with the core values of Ghana’s education system and uphold standards of discipline and responsibility.
The Ministry says further directives will be communicated after the review process is completed.
