Brazilian defender Marcelo has officially announced his retirement from football at the age of 36, bringing an end to a remarkable career.
The former left-back, regarded as one of the most decorated players in football history, earned 58 caps for Brazil.
Marcelo began his professional journey with Brazilian club Fluminense before moving to Real Madrid in 2007 at just 18 years old. Over 15 incredible years at the Bernabéu, he amassed 25 major trophies, including five UEFA Champions League titles and six La Liga crowns.
Reflecting on his journey, Marcelo shared an emotional farewell message on social media:
“At 18, Real Madrid knocked on my door, and I arrived here. Now, I can proudly say that I am a true Madrileño. Sixteen seasons, 25 titles, five Champions Leagues, and unforgettable nights at the Bernabéu. What a journey!
“My time as a player has come to an end, but I still have so much to offer to football. Thank you for everything.”
Marcelo made history in 2021 by becoming Real Madrid’s first non-Spanish club captain in 117 years. Paying tribute to his legacy, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez hailed him as one of the greatest left-backs in the club’s history.
“Marcelo is one of Real Madrid’s greatest legends, and we were privileged to enjoy his brilliance for so many years. This club will always be his home,” Pérez said.
After leaving Madrid in 2022, Marcelo briefly joined Greek club Olympiacos but parted ways just five months later. He returned to his boyhood club Fluminense in 2023, playing 68 matches over two seasons. His time there ended in November following a reported dispute with manager Mano Menezes.
Marcelo now embarks on a new chapter beyond playing, with fans eager to see how he continues to contribute to football.
