Darwin Nunez came off the bench to score a dramatic late double, sealing Liverpool’s win over Brentford and extending their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points.

Liverpool appeared set for a frustrating night, with their search for a first league victory of 2025 seemingly destined to stretch to a third game. However, Nunez broke the deadlock in stoppage time.

The Uruguayan striker struck in the 91st minute, calmly slotting home from close range after meeting a low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Just two minutes later, Nunez added a second, showing composure in a crowded penalty area to finish off a swift counter-attack as Brentford’s stretched defence was caught out.

Liverpool had dominated possession and territory throughout the match and deserved the victory despite their struggles to convert chances earlier on.

Dominik Szoboszlai rattled the crossbar in the first half, while Luis Diaz missed a golden opportunity with a header after finding himself unmarked at the far post.

Brentford, content to defend deep and absorb pressure, offered little going forward, with Bryan Mbeumo often left isolated up front.

As the match progressed, Liverpool maintained control, dictating the tempo while Brentford retreated further into their half. Yet, the cutting edge that characterized Liverpool’s early-season form was missing—until Nunez delivered when it mattered most.

The win gives Liverpool a crucial cushion over second-placed Arsenal and keeps their title charge firmly on track.
