Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to restore July 1 as a statutory public holiday, reviving its historical significance as Republic Day and Senior Citizens’ Day in Ghana.
Speaking during his Thank You tour in the Western Region on Wednesday, February 5, Mahama proposed that the day also serve as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, encouraging Ghanaians to reflect on the nation’s journey and express gratitude.
“We will soon have the opportunity as a nation to pray and give thanks to the Almighty God, as the Holy Book enjoins us: ‘In all things, give thanks,’” he remarked.
To facilitate the observance, Mahama announced plans to establish a committee of religious leaders to coordinate preparations for the event.
He further revealed that his administration would introduce amendments to the Public Holidays Act in Parliament to officially reinstate July 1 as a statutory holiday.
“In these amendments, we will also honor our commitment to the Muslim community by adding an additional public holiday to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr,” he assured.
