The Inland Chief Fishermen, Queen Processors, and Traders Council of the Oti Region have called on President John Dramani Mahama to consider appointing Nkwanta South MP Geoffrey Kini as Deputy Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development.
The council believes that Mr. Kini’s roots in the inland region, coupled with his deep understanding of inland fisheries, position him as the ideal candidate to champion the development of the fishing industry.
Speaking to Adom News in Dambai, General Secretary John Agbeti highlighted the potential benefits of Mr. Kini’s appointment. He noted that the MP’s involvement would lead to the formulation of policies tailored to the needs of inland fishing communities, fostering sustainable practices and improving the livelihoods of those who rely on the industry.
Daniel Akpaglo Nyameko, President of the Inland Fisheries, added that having Mr. Kini in the role would strengthen collaboration between the government and fishing communities. He emphasized the importance of ensuring inland fishermen have a strong voice at the national level, which he believes Mr. Kini would provide.
Torgbui Dordoe, leader of the Inland Chief Fishermen, underscored the significance of the Volta Lake and other water bodies in the Oti Region, which support the livelihoods of thousands of fishermen. However, he pointed out that the industry faces several pressing challenges, including inadequate resources and unsustainable practices.
According to Torgbui Dordoe, appointing a deputy minister from the region would bring much-needed attention to these issues and ensure the region’s fisheries sector receives the support it deserves.
The council remains hopeful that their appeal will resonate with President Mahama, paving the way for enhanced development in the inland fisheries sector.
