The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, has called on Ghanaians to honour the memory of former President Jerry John Rawlings by embracing the values of honesty, accountability, justice, and patriotism that shaped his leadership.
Speaking at a lecture and exhibition in Accra to commemorate what would have been Rawlings’ 79th birthday, Togbe Afede said the late statesman’s principles remain crucial to Ghana’s development and democratic progress.
According to him, Rawlings dedicated his public life to promoting probity, social justice, national unity, and equal opportunities for all citizens, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence Ghana’s governance system.
“The best tribute we can pay to President Rawlings, the best honour we can do to him, is to hold firmly on to the principles that he stood for,” Togbe Afede stated.
The respected traditional leader highlighted several achievements associated with Rawlings’ era, including the strengthening of Ghana’s Fourth Republic, the establishment of district assemblies, and major investments in infrastructure, education, agriculture, rural electrification, and local governance.
He noted that these contributions played a significant role in shaping modern Ghana and improving the lives of many citizens across the country.
The event attracted senior government officials, political leaders, and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
Jerry John Rawlings, who passed away on November 12, 2020, remains one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s political history, with many supporters continuing to celebrate his commitment to national development and accountability.
Togbe Afede’s remarks served as a reminder that preserving Rawlings’ legacy goes beyond remembrance and requires a collective commitment to the values he championed throughout his life.
