Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the Clerk of the Appointments Committee, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, of bias following a heated confrontation between the Majority and Minority during the vetting of Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The disagreement arose as both sides clashed over whether to proceed with the vetting session or defer it to a later date.
Addressing journalists, Afenyo-Markin directly accused Jiagge-Gobah of siding with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), claiming her actions reflected partisanship.
“When we have questions for nominees, we ask them—nothing will stop us. Some nominees were questioned for only five minutes. The NDC has a habit of trying to intimidate people; they always want to bully,” he asserted. “We will not be bullied. They may call us a micro-minority, but we have been cooperative. The Clerk to the Committee is partisan. She is an NDC member, aligning with them and mishandling meeting notifications. On January 29, there was no agreement, yet at 10 PM, she advertised the meeting.”
Tensions flared when the Minority proposed postponing the vetting to Friday, citing concerns over how the process was being handled. The Majority, however, rejected the proposal, insisting that the proceedings continue as planned.
The standoff escalated into chaos as Minority members disrupted the session by overturning tables and breaking microphones in protest. Despite the disorder, the Majority maintained their stance, arguing that the committee was simply following its scheduled proceedings.
In response to the turmoil, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga stepped in, suspending the vetting and officially rescheduling it for Friday, January 31.
